Meet "Georgena", one of the Jerseys supplying milk for the Herd Shares!
Dairy Herd Share Basics
We got our 4 registered Jerseys right before Christmas, and we’re loving them! They came from dear friends of ours, who have a certified organic dairy farm in Maryland. The Jerseys were born and raised there, and they have always been 100% grass fed. The butterfat content in the milk is high (making delicious, dark yellow butter!), and the protein is tremendous.
Through our HERD SHARE program, you may enjoy the benefits of this milk as well!
The Facts:
- We can't sell raw milk, to be in accordance with Virginia state law, but we can sell shares of the dairy herd. The owner of the share is then entitled to what their share produces (about 1 gallon/week).
- The purchase price of each share is $100. This is a one-time purchase, and you will have a bill of sale.
- The share ownership lasts until you decide you don't wish to own a share any longer, or we cannot continue the shares. In either case, we just ask for a 60 day notice if possible, and then we will purchase the share back from you for the original purchase price.
- To cover the costs of care, milking, and labor of your herd share, we charge a maintenance fee of $30/share/month.
- Each week, on your assigned day, you will pick up your milk at our farm store (“The Grainery”) in Gladys, VA or at the Lynchburg Community Market, in downtown Lynchburg, VA. If neither of these locations are convenient for you, contact us for alternative pick up locations
- If you have half-gallon, wide mouth jars (you'll need 4), you can use yours, or we have some that you can purchase for $2.50 ea. Each week, you would drop off 2 cleaned jars & lids, and pick up your 2 jars of fresh milk.
- If you're interested, contact us so we can get you the contract (which says what was just said, but in legal terms to make it “official”), and get you your milk!
